GOB vs COB vs DMS LED: Which Outdoor Display Tech Wins in 2026?

Published January 15, 2026

A plain-English breakdown of the three modern outdoor LED encapsulation technologies.

If you've shopped for an outdoor LED screen in the last year, you've seen three acronyms thrown around: GOB, COB, and DMS. They all describe how the LEDs are protected at the module level — and they're the reason a true 4K outdoor screen is finally practical.

GOB (Glue-On-Board)

Standard SMD LEDs are mounted to the PCB, then a transparent epoxy is applied over the entire surface. The result is a screen you can hose off, that survives a thrown beach ball, and that resists salt air and chlorinated splash. GOB is the most cost-effective modern outdoor option.

COB (Chip-On-Board)

The LED chips are mounted directly to the PCB (no individual SMD packaging) and the entire surface is encapsulated during manufacture. Slightly tighter pixel pitches are possible, contrast is marginally better, and durability matches GOB. Cost is 15–25% higher.

DMS

A newer encapsulation aimed at extreme environments — combines COB-style direct mounting with an additional weather-sealed layer. We spec DMS for oceanfront and bluff installs where salt air is constant.

Which to choose

For 90% of luxury pool installs we recommend GOB. For close-viewing patio walls under 8 feet, COB. For Malibu oceanfront, DMS. We confirm during the on-site survey.
