License Plate Recognition Cameras: A 2026 Buyer's Guide for Luxury Estates

License plate recognition (LPR) cameras were a commercial-only product five years ago. In 2026 they're standard at every gated estate we install — and the technology has gotten dramatically better and cheaper. Here's what to know before specifying one.

What an LPR camera actually does

An LPR camera captures plates accurately at speed (up to ~50 mph) and feeds them to software that reads the alphanumeric value. Modern systems log every entry/exit with date, time, plate, and a still image — and can trigger automations like gate open, recipient notifications, or alerts on unknown plates.

Why residential is different from commercial

Commercial LPR is built around enforcement (parking fines, tolling). Residential LPR is built around convenience and security: friend's plate arrives → gate opens automatically; unknown plate lingers → owner gets a push notification; delivery plate matches whitelist → side gate unlocks.

What to look for in a residential LPR camera

True 4K sensor with global shutter (motion blur kills accuracy). Infrared illuminator built in (most license plates are reflective and need IR at night). Local processing — plate matching should happen on-device or on a local NVR, not in the cloud. Integration with your access control (intercom + gate).

Install considerations

Mounting angle is everything — the camera must see plates head-on within ~30 degrees. Distance matters: a 4K sensor accurately reads plates at 30–80 feet. Power and network require a single PoE run from the rack. We coordinate trenching with your landscaper if needed.
